The castle above Corfe was slighted — deliberately blown up — by Parliament in 1646 after two Civil War sieges, and much of the grey Purbeck stone in the village below was salvaged from its ruins. The cottages fill the gap in the Purbeck ridge with barely a modern building among them. The Swanage Railway’s steam trains stop right in the village, with Swanage at the far end of the line.
