Swanage is a Victorian seaside town at the eastern tip of Purbeck, with a sandy bay, a restored pier and rows of guest houses that went up when the railway and steamers began bringing holidaymakers. The Swanage Railway still runs steam trains inland to Corfe Castle and Norden, a scenic five and a half miles rebuilt in stages through the 1990s.
