Run by the Newman family since 1907, the Square and Compass sits high above the sea at Worth Matravers, on the Purbeck cliffs. There’s no bar as such — ale and local cider come through a serving hatch, with pasties to match. A small free fossil museum, gathered by the family, fills a side room, and the stone-walled garden looks out to the Channel. Cash is preferred. It’s a walk from here down to Winspit Quarry and the coast path.
