Wareham is a Saxon town still ringed by its earth ramparts, thought to have been raised under Alfred against Viking raids. A grid of Georgian streets runs down to the quay on the River Frome, once a working port before Poole took its trade. St Martin’s church holds Eric Kennington’s Purbeck-stone effigy of T. E. Lawrence, carved in Arab dress. Trains stop just north of the centre.
