If you play golf, Machrihanish is a name that carries weight: its classic links course was laid out by Old Tom Morris, and the newer Machrihanish Dunes course sits alongside. Behind the greens runs a glorious three-mile sweep of Atlantic sand stretching north to Westport, good for a surf as well as a walk. The village is on the B843 just west of Campbeltown, out on the exposed western coast of Kintyre.
