A sea loch biting deep into Mull under Ben More, with basalt cliffs, offshore isles and Staffa's columns within reach
Loch na Keal cuts a deep bite into the west side of Mull, and the National Scenic Area gathers the loch, its shores and a string of small islands into 442 square kilometres. Basalt cliffs, raised beaches and the bulk of the island’s one big mountain give it a strong, open character.
Ben More rises near the head of the loch — the only Munro on Mull, and a rewarding climb on a clear day with sea and islands laid out below. Offshore, Staffa is famous, its hexagonal basalt columns and Fingal’s Cave reached by boat trips in the season, while Gometra lies out to the west beyond Ulva.
Boat sailings to the islands depend on the sea state, and Ben More is a serious hill that draws cloud. Give both a settled day.
