Standing remainssubstantial fabric survives to stand in front of
Not a ruin: the abbey church is roofed, lit and in use. Columba founded a monastery here in 563; the present Benedictine church dates from around 1200, stood roofless after the Reformation, and was rebuilt between 1902 and 1910. The ecumenical Iona Community has kept daily worship going since 1938, and anyone can join a service. Historic Environment Scotland maintains the fabric and charges admission outside service times. St Oran’s Chapel and the royal burial ground are beside the church, the roofless Augustinian nunnery is down by the jetty, and the island’s own parish church is a few minutes’ walk.
