The oldest of Islay’s working distilleries, founded in 1779, Bowmore sits right on the shore of Loch Indaal in the island’s main village. Its whisky is peaty but a touch gentler than the south-coast heavyweights. The visitor centre runs tours and tastings, and the seaside warehouses are famous for maturing casks close to the water. Handy to combine with a wander round Bowmore itself and its unusual round church.
