Finlaggan was the power base of the medieval Lords of the Isles, the Clan Donald chiefs who ruled the western seaboard from these low islands in a quiet Islay loch. Little remains but foundations and carved stones, yet it’s a genuinely important spot in Scottish history. The Finlaggan Trust runs a small visitor centre and museum telling the story, off the A846 near Ballygrant. A wooden walkway leads out to the main island.
