Jura’s name comes from the Old Norse for “deer island”, which is where Deer Island Rum takes its name — the island’s first rum distillery, opened at Craighouse in 2021. It’s a small-batch operation, so bottles come mainly through its own online shop and local outlets rather than a big visitor centre. Getting to Jura is part of it: ferry to Islay, then the short Feolin crossing, or a summer passenger boat from Tayvallich. Lussa Gin is made further up the same island.
