Islay’s capital, Bowmore was laid out as a planned village in 1770 by Daniel Campbell the Younger, and its neat Georgian grid still runs down to the sea. At the top of the main street stands the Round Church, Kilarrow Parish Church, built to an unusual circular plan; at the bottom sits Bowmore Distillery, right on the waterfront. Reach Bowmore by the A846 from either Islay ferry port. A good base for touring the island’s distilleries.
