Known as the Big Strand, Laggan Bay is a seven-mile arc of Atlantic sand running down Islay’s western shore behind a long wall of dunes — about as much empty beach as anyone could want. It backs onto Machrie and the golf links off the A846. Bracing rather than sheltered, with the full ocean swell coming ashore, so it’s better for a long walk than a paddle.
