Lagavulin makes one of Islay’s big smoky single malts, its whitewashed buildings sitting right on a bay on the island’s south coast, with the ruins of Dunyvaig Castle out on the point. The 16-year-old is the bottling most people know. There’s a visitor centre and tours — book ahead — a little east of Port Ellen on the A846, close to neighbours Laphroaig and Ardbeg.
