The handsome whitewashed village on the Rinns of Islay, Port Charlotte was laid out in 1828 to house workers at the old Lochindaal distillery. Today it holds the Museum of Islay Life, and the Bruichladdich distillery is just up the road, maturing its heavily peated Port Charlotte whisky in the village’s former warehouses. On the A847 along Loch Indaal, it makes a lovely base for exploring the Rinns.
