Rothesay was the grand Victorian holiday resort of the Clyde, and still carries a faded seaside charm as the main town on Bute. Its centrepiece is Rothesay Castle, an unusual round 13th-century castle ringed by a broad water-filled moat, looked after by Historic Environment Scotland and open year round. Don’t miss the ornate Victorian gents’ toilets on the pier - genuinely a local attraction. Reached by CalMac car ferry from Wemyss Bay, which has its own train from Glasgow.
