Mount Stuart is an extraordinary Gothic-revival mansion on Bute, built for the 3rd Marquess of Bute by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson from the 1870s. It’s said to have had the first heated indoor swimming pool in any house, and was the first home in Scotland lit by electricity. Around it lie 300 acres of woodland, walled gardens and shore. House and grounds open seasonally, with an admission charge; the ferry runs Wemyss Bay to Rothesay.
