Ascog Hall’s real draw is its restored Victorian fernery — a sunken glasshouse of a kind that’s now very rare — set within a plant-rich garden. It’s a lovely and slightly unexpected thing to come across on Bute. You’ll find it at Ascog on the A844, just south of Rothesay.
