You come to the Kyles for the passage through them, whether by boat or by road — steep green shores closing in on either side with the water threading between. They wrap around the north end of the Isle of Bute, fifty-seven square kilometres of Argyll coast and hill, low-key and unhurried.

A small ferry still crosses from Colintraive to Bute where the channel pinches in, which is part of the character of the place. Walkers have the West Island Way over on Bute itself and the longer Loch Lomond & Cowal Way on the mainland side, so there is a mix of short outings and longer multi-day routes.

None of it is high or fierce. The views are best on a clear, still day, when the kyles go flat and hold the reflection of the hills.
