After a beach with nobody on it? Ostel Bay is reckoned the finest on the Cowal peninsula — a curve of golden sand you reach on a 15-minute walk over the dunes from the road near Kilbride, with Arran filling the view out to sea. The short walk in is enough to keep the crowds away. It’s tucked down in south-west Cowal, well off the main routes.
