Two canopied medieval tombs are the reason to come: a knight in plate armour with a dog-crested helm under his head, and a lady at prayer with a baby beside her. They stand in the chancel of St Mary’s Chapel, which is all that is left of Rothesay’s old parish church — the nave came down in 1692 and worship moved to the church that still stands alongside. The chancel has been re-roofed to keep weather off the carvings. Free to visit, though it shuts a couple of days midweek. At the Townhead edge of Rothesay, ten minutes from Rothesay Castle.
