Loch Awe stretches for more than twenty miles through Argyll, one of the longest freshwater lochs in Scotland, hemmed in by hills with the bulk of Ben Cruachan at its northern end. That north end is the one people photograph, where the ruined tower of Kilchurn Castle, a Campbell stronghold, stands on a low spit against the mountains. Several islands have ruins of their own, among them Ardchonnel Castle on Innis Chonnell. The loch has long been prized by anglers for its big brown trout. The village of Kilchrenan sits above the western shore, and it’s a short drive over to Inveraray on Loch Fyne.
