Inveraray is a planned town of white-harled buildings on the shore of Loch Fyne, rebuilt from around 1770 by the Duke of Argyll after he cleared the old burgh to make way for his new castle. It remains the seat of the Dukes, and the grand Inveraray Castle stands just north of the town. In the centre you can tour Inveraray Jail, a Georgian courthouse and prison turned museum. It’s on the A83 at the head of the loch.
