A sea loch is an arm of the sea reaching inland, and Loch Etive is a fine long one, curling nearly twenty miles up from the coast into the Argyll hills. At its narrow mouth the tide pours under Connel Bridge across a rock ledge, making the churning rapids known as the Falls of Lora. Ben Cruachan rises above the southern shore, and the village of Taynuilt on the same side makes the easiest way in. Beyond the head of the loch lies Glen Etive, a steep, quiet glen of waterfalls dropping down from the edge of Glen Coe. The upper reaches are hard to get to by road, which is much of their appeal.
