St Conan’s Kirk on the shore of Loch Awe is a wonderful oddity, built between 1881 and 1914 by Walter Douglas Campbell, who kept redesigning it as he went and folded Norman, Gothic and Celtic touches into the one building. Great granite boulders from Ben Cruachan hold up the chancel arch, and a side chapel keeps a fragment of bone said to be Robert the Bruce’s. It’s free to enter, on the A85 at Lochawe village, with the station barely a kilometre away.
