The MacDougalls, Lords of Lorn, had a small fort here around 1320, and the Stewarts, who took over the lordship later that century, are thought to have built the present tower house around the 1440s. A tower house is a tall stone home built to be defended. The story goes that a drunken bet around 1620 lost it to the Campbells, who finally abandoned it around 1840, when it lost its roof. Lt Col D. R. Stewart Allward bought it in 1965 and restored it over about ten years. It is still privately owned, and the owners run a limited number of tours by appointment in summer, reached by boat. Most people see it from the shore of Loch Laich beside the A828, near Port Appin, inside the Lynn of Lorn National Scenic Area. Film fans may know it as the Castle Aaaaarrrrrrggghhh at the end of Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
