The Corryvreckan is the third-largest whirlpool in the world, roaring in the tidal gulf between the islands of Jura and Scarba. On a big flood tide it throws up standing waves and a rush you can hear miles off; George Orwell was nearly drowned here in 1947. These are seriously dangerous waters, so admire it from north Jura’s shore (a long walk in) or, better, on a skippered RIB trip from Easdale or Craobh Haven that times the tide for you.
