Oban is the busy ferry town of the west coast, wrapped around a horseshoe bay and topped by the folly of McCaig’s Tower. It’s the main gateway to the Inner Hebrides: CalMac boats leave here for Mull, Colonsay, Coll, Tiree, Barra and Lismore, so it’s where most island trips begin. The railway from Glasgow ends right at the pier, which makes it an easy place to reach without a car. There’s plenty of good seafood on the quayside while you wait for a boat.
