Arrochar sits at the head of Loch Long, right under the Arrochar Alps and their best-known peak, Ben Arthur, better known as the Cobbler. It’s a natural base for walkers heading up into those hills, with the loch on one side and the climbs on the other. Unusually for this part of Argyll it has its own railway: Arrochar & Tarbet station, on the West Highland Line, is about 1.5km east and makes getting here without a car genuinely easy.
