Places to explore in LancashireEngland · North West England

Lancashire runs from the tidal flats of Morecambe Bay to the gritstone heights of the Forest of Bowland, a broad upland of heather and peat crowned by Ward's Stone. Below it the Ribble winds through green farmland, its estuary a vast feeding ground for wading birds at the Ribble Estuary, with the reedbeds of Leighton Moss further north. Pendle Hill stands over the eastern valleys, its name bound up with the witch trials of 1612. The little Norman keep of Clitheroe Castle guards the gap where the river breaks through the hills.
