Gawthorpe Hall is a tall Jacobean house near Padiham, its foundation stone laid in 1600 and often linked to the architect Robert Smythson. Charles Barry restored it in the 1850s and laid out the formal garden on the terrace behind. Inside is the remarkable Gawthorpe Textiles Collection, gathered by Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth. Now National Trust, it sits in wooded grounds along the River Calder, a fine spot for a wander. Padiham is a short hop west of Burnley. The house opens Wednesday to Sunday from April to October, with a charge for non-members.
