The tower of St Mary’s at Newchurch-in-Pendle carries a curious carved ‘eye of God’, said to ward off evil - fitting for a village at the heart of Pendle witch country. Down the lane you’ll find Witches Galore, a gloriously kitsch shop stuffed with witch souvenirs. It’s a small, steep village high on Pendle’s flank, and good for walks up the hill. Brierfield station is about 4km to the south-east.
