Downham has been kept deliberately unspoilt by the Assheton family, who have owned it for centuries - you won’t find TV aerials or road markings cluttering the streets - and it’s often called the loveliest village in Lancashire. Stone cottages step down to a beck below Pendle Hill, with a pub and a tea room, and it’s a popular film and TV location. Clitheroe station is about 5km to the south-west.
