The ruins of Sawley Abbey, a Cistercian house founded in the 12th century and now cared for by English Heritage, are the reason to stop at Sawley - free to wander and quietly atmospheric by the Ribble. The Spread Eagle inn sits just opposite for lunch afterwards. It’s a small riverside village a few miles from Clitheroe, whose station is about 6km to the south-west.
