High in Pendle witch country at Newchurch-in-Pendle, St Mary’s has a curious feature on its tower — a carved oval known as the ‘Eye of God’, said to keep watch over the village. The church itself dates mostly from around 1740, and a headstone in the churchyard may belong to relatives of Alice Nutter, one of the accused Pendle witches; you’ll find her statue not far off at Roughlee. Open to visitors.
