Alice Nutter was one of the Pendle women hanged after the 1612 witch trials, and this bronze of her sits by the beck in Roughlee, hands bound and gaze fixed down the lane. She was a gentlewoman of some standing, which made her conviction all the stranger. Free to see any time. The Pendle Sculpture Trail above Barley picks up the same dark story in carved wood.
