Preston’s Moor Park began as common grazing land granted to the town’s burgesses by Henry III in 1253, before the council enclosed it in the 1830s as one of the country’s first municipal parks with guaranteed public access. Edward Milner landscaped the paths and lake in the 1860s, and a small observatory built for the 1927 solar eclipse still runs occasional public stargazing evenings, now looked after by the University of Central Lancashire. It’s free to wander any time, a short walk from Preston station.
