Samlesbury Hall is a striking black-and-white timbered manor begun in 1325 by Gilbert de Southworth, standing just off the busy road between Preston and Blackburn. These days it earns its keep with craft shops, a café, a bee centre and a full events calendar, and it’s reputedly one of Lancashire’s most haunted houses. Free to look round the grounds and the great hall on most days. Pleasington station is about 5km away.
