The Romans built a cavalry fort called Bremetennacum here, and Ribchester still sits right on top of it - the small Roman Museum tells the story, and Roman stones crop up around the village, including the columns propping up the porch of the White Bull. Just outside is Stydd, with its ancient chapel and a row of almshouses. It’s a likeable spot on the banks of the Ribble. Ramsgreave & Wilpshire station is about 5km to the south-east.
