Ribchester sits on the Roman fort of Bremetennacum, and this small village museum tells its story through finds dug from beneath the surrounding streets and fields. Its prize is a replica of the Ribchester Helmet, a spectacular Roman cavalry parade helmet ploughed up here in 1796 — the original is now in the British Museum. Founded back in 1915, it’s an easy stop beside the church. Admission charge; Ramsgreave & Wilpshire station is about 5km away.
