Tolkien knew Stonyhurst College well - his son studied there and he stayed at the college during the 1940s - and the Ribble Valley around Hurst Green is often linked to the landscapes of Middle-earth. The waymarked Tolkien Trail loops out from the village and back along the river. Hurst Green itself sits right at the college gates, with a couple of pubs and almshouses on the green. Langho station is about 4km to the south-east.
