Beside the ruins of Whalley Abbey, the old parish church at Whalley keeps three carved Anglo-Saxon crosses in its churchyard, thought to date from the tenth or eleventh century. Inside are wonderful oak choir stalls brought from the abbey around 1430, their misericords carved with everything from St George and the dragon to a wife walloping her husband with a pan. St Mary’s is open to visitors, and Whalley station is a few minutes’ walk away.
