Hoghton Tower stands on the highest hill for miles between Preston and Blackburn, a fortified manor of the de Hoghton family reached up a long, straight drive. When James I feasted here in 1617, he’s said to have been so taken with a loin of beef that he knighted it “Sir Loin” — a good yarn, if almost certainly a tall one. It opens for tours on set days, so check before you go. Pleasington station is about 2km away.
