Rufford Old Hall is a National Trust Tudor house near Ormskirk, and its great hall is the showpiece — a soaring timber-framed room with an angel-carved hammerbeam roof and an extraordinary movable screen cut from bog oak, the only one of its kind left. There’s a tale that a young William Shakespeare once performed here, though nobody can prove it. Outside, the Victorian gardens are cheerful with topiary, including two yews clipped into giant squirrels. Rufford is seven miles north of Ormskirk.
