Slaidburn is a grey-stone village where the moorland roads of northern Bowland come down to the River Hodder. There’s a green right by the river, a 17th-century grammar school building and the Hark to Bounty inn, said to be named after a huntsman’s noisy hound. It’s remote, handsome country and a real walkers’ favourite. Clitheroe station is about 13km to the south, so most people arrive by car.
