The “Taj Mahal of the North”, the Ashton Memorial is a great domed folly crowning Williamson Park above Lancaster. Lord Ashton, the linoleum magnate, had it built between 1907 and 1909 in memory of his wife Jessy, and the architect John Belcher gave it full Edwardian Baroque swagger. Climb up inside for views over Morecambe Bay and the Bowland fells. Lancaster station is under 2km away, then it’s a walk up through the park.
