Gresgarth Hall is the private garden of designer Arabella Lennox-Boyd, who has been shaping it since 1978 in the Lune valley at Caton. It blends Italian formality with rich English planting, set around a lake with terraces above and woodland walks beyond, and is one of the most admired gardens in the North. It opens to the public on just a handful of days through the year (there’s an admission charge), so check the dates before setting off. Lancaster station is about 6km to the west.
