Abbeystead is a small estate hamlet deep in the Forest of Bowland, set where the two branches of the River Wyre come together below the fells. It takes its name from a Cistercian monastery that once stood nearby but has long since vanished. This is quiet walking country, well off the tourist run, with open moorland rising all around. Lancaster station is about 12km to the north-west if you’re coming by train.
