A working weaving mill still runs at Calder Vale, tucked into a steep wooded fold on the western edge of Bowland - a genuine rarity, as most such mills closed long ago. The village grew up around it in the 19th century, its terraced cottages dropping down to the little River Calder. There’s no through road to speak of, which keeps it wonderfully quiet. It’s a fair way from the nearest station at Salwick, so come by car.
