The Priory Church of St Mary stands right beside Lancaster Castle on the hill above the city, founded as a Benedictine priory in 1094 by Roger de Poitou. When Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries it carried on as Lancaster’s parish church, which it still is today. It’s open to visitors, and Lancaster station is a short walk downhill to the south-west.
