One of the oldest churches in the North West, St Peter’s stands above Morecambe Bay at Heysham, founded perhaps in the seventh or eighth century. Inside is a superb tenth-century Viking hogback stone, carved with wolves, deer and figures. Just up the headland are the ruined chapel and the famous rock-cut graves. A gorgeous spot, and open to visitors; Heysham Port station is under 2km to the south-west.
